When Elena wakes as a vampire she attacks Stefan in an attempt to save Damon. Stefan prepares to allow Elena to kill him however Damon stops Elena and admits that Elena has lost a large proportion of her memory and needs human blood to complete the transformation. In a rage Stefan attacks some of the students, including Tyler, he then persuades Matt to surrender some of his blood to help Elena

Elena wakes a few days later, stronger and with her memory intact. She goes to the church where her funeral is being held and listens to Meredith’s speech which has a hidden meaning to it – Meredith knows Elena isn’t dead. As the funeral is ending the mourners are attacked by the towns dogs who are possessed by an evil power. Elena asks Stefan and Damon to work together and help Fell’s Church against the Other Power.

Meredith confides Elena’s secret to Alaric who informs Elena and Damon that the parents of some of the students intended to hurt Stefan because Caroline had identified him as the attacker of the students. Damon and Elena rescue Stefan and Alaric persuades the mob that Caroline may have been confused about who the attacker actually was.

The group believe that at the upcoming dance the Other Power will influence the towns animals to attack. However Bonnie has a vision that points them to the tombs of Honoria and Thomas Fell – the founders of Fells Church. Once at the tomb, Stefan and Damon lift the lid off the tomb which revels a crypt. Whilst inside the crypt the ghost of Honoria Fell appears to tell Elena that she must protect Fell’s Church now.

A white tiger then appears in the crypt and attacks the group. Elena first believes the tiger to be Damon but he then appears in the form of a wolf and attacks the tiger. The humans escape the crypt and head to the dance. Elena and Stefan are knocked unconscious.

Elena wakes later, tied up along with Stefan and Damon. Stefan identifies the Other Power as Katherine – the girl he loved and the vampire who changed him. Katherine reveals how she faked her own death in a bid to reconcile the two brothers and she admits to wanting to punish them both now for not loving each other. Katherine takes Elena’s, Stefan’s and Damons lapis lazuli rings and admits that she plans to burn them alive.

Elena breaks free from her bonds and attacks Katherine, however both girls fall into the sunlight and Katherine bursts into flames instantly. Being a new vampire Elena does not die instantly but starts to fade in Stefan’s arms. As a last request Elena asks that Stefan and Damon promise to take care of each other.
